How Basf explains rating scope
Ratings are helpful only when the buyer understands what they include. EcoVadis may evaluate policies, actions, and reporting evidence across labor, environment, ethics, and procurement; CDP focuses on climate disclosure and management; SBTi examines target ambition against climate science. Basf does not treat these ratings as a substitute for SDS, product carbon factors, or site-specific data. Instead, they are used as a corporate-level trust layer that sits above product documentation.
For material selection, sustainability review still returns to the grade. A recycled-content resin needs mass-balance documentation and chain-of-custody language. A low-VOC coating additive should be supported by test data and formulation context. A claim about biodegradability must reference OECD 301, 302, or 310 where relevant rather than relying on broad environmental wording.
Five-year ESG trend
Basf tracks sustainability as a sequence of operational controls. A target becomes useful to customers only when it is connected to measurement boundaries, a reporting year, and a verification route. The five-year view below summarizes how corporate programs move from pilot methodology to supplier engagement, chain-of-custody control, water stewardship, and science-based target review.

Trend statements are summarized for website navigation. Customer audits should request the underlying report year, accounting boundary, and verification statement. For product-specific sustainability claims, Basf recommends pairing the corporate ESG file with grade-level documentation such as PCF notes, mass-balance certificates, recycled-content declarations, or SDS handling language, because a corporate rating alone does not prove suitability for a downstream application.
